  • Scout groups are encouraged to enter their own Patrols via the entry form - See Entries page for details. Early entry is encouraged, team name details may be updated at a later date if not yet known. Participants in the Emlyn camping competition are automatically entered into the cooking competition and all teams will be competing for the same trophy.

Costs are detailed on the Entries page and include attendance to the campfire held after the competition, a small supper and a commemorative badge.

    • Patrols are to prepare a printed 3 course menu and hand it in on arrival.

    • Patrols are required to provide all equipment and food they will need for the competition in order to run a self sufficient kitchen (although the kitchen itself will not be marked).

    • On arrival, Patrols will be allocated a pitch to set up and given a time of serving for the starter course of their meal (this will be close to the time indicated on the timetable above, but timings may be staggered slightly depending on the number of entries).

    • A safety team will check that all altar fires are safe and Patrols must ensure that their equipment has been checked prior to lighting the fire.

    • All food is to be prepared and cooked on site by the Patrol.

    • Washed up equipment is to be left out for inspection following the meal.

    • Packed up kit is to be packed away to the edge of the pitch, ready for collection by leaders/parents.

    • Patrols taking part in the cooking competition only will be judged against the same score sheet and compete for the same trophy as Patrols taking part in the Emlyn Trophy camping weekend.

    • Equipment is to be packed away ready for vehicle loading and fires are to be extinguished prior to attending the campfire.

    • Sites should be left in clean presentable condition as they were found on arrival.

    • Gas stoves may be used, but the competition is intended to test skills for cooking over fire, so up to half marks will be deducted for using a gas stove.

  • Patrols will be scored against the following criteria using score sheets 10, 11, 12 and 14 which can be found in the downloads section. The following is scored:

    • Quality of food preparation, and enjoyment of meal by the whole Patrol.

    • Quantity of the food to be sufficient for Patrol.

    • Presentation of meals.

    • Hygiene practice in preparing and serving meal as well as tidying after eating.

    • Timing of meal and timing of gaps between courses.

    • Nutritional value of the meal prepared.

    • Meal served being the same as submitted menu.

Marks may also be awarded/deducted via Judges Discretion scoresheet.

  • The following equipment should be brought to the competition:

    • Food as per menu prepared by Patrol.

    • Altar fire (or arrange to borrow one from the site - please contact us as early as possible if you need to borrow one) - the fire must be of a firm and stable construction with drum/tray and legs all in good condition and strong enough to support foreseeable loads.

    • Wood for cooking - the site has limited firewood, so please bring your own if possible.

    • Axe/saw if required.

    • Chopping block if required.

    • Fire Buckets

    • Cooking Utensils and billies/pots.

    • Water Barrel.

    • Plates, cups, serving/eating equipment.

    • Table and benches.

    • Torches, or lamp lighting.

    • Site allocation will be in the open, so Patrols are encouraged to bring some form of shelter to provide protection from the weather (using judgement based on the forecast).

    • Washing up bowls and equipment.

  • Patrols will be competing for the Penfold Camp Cook Trophy. See Trophies page.

Hampshire Scouts Camp Cooking Competition is to be held concurrently with the Emlyn Trophy camp, with Patrols able to attend just for the cooking competition if they are not participating in the Emlyn Trophy Camp. Emlyn Trophy Patrols are automatically included in the competition.

Patrols are to demonstrate their skills of preparing a 3-course meal and cooking it over an altar fire.
